aged youth

(gtjv)

I love how it captures my aged hand (not quite beautiful) against my still-young face.

45 thoughts for my daughter Francesca Lia Block

forty-five thoughts for my daughter and my virtual daughters
By Francesca Lia Block

i always believed if i had blond hair, pixie face
big breasts
everything would be all right
not realizing that culturally idolized beauty
is not only foolproof
but potentially dangerous

if you believe in your own unconventional beauty
when you are young
you will accomplish twice as much and suffer half so

turn off lightbulbs and light a candle

walk don’t drive

plant a tree

wear sunscreen

dancing is an antidepressant

kindness is the new status symbol

every day please try to eat something green
and something orange
that grow out of the ground

tell me how mad you are
that your father and i parted
i will always listen
though i can’t ever take away the pain

expectations are for what you yourself create

they rarely work when applied to others

turn off the television

tv is a depressant

yoga is an antidepressant

don’t feel guilty about wanting pretty things

they would not be so alluring
if you weren’t supposed to want them
just don’t value them over compassion

use your words even when you are a grown-up
and people no longer think it is entirely acceptable
when you say, that hurt my feelings

if you can digest chocolate eat it sometimes

same goes for ice cream
(i don’t really need to tell you those things do i?)

do your homework because it is part of the game but

don’t spend too much time worrying about grades

fall in love with someone kind who loves your body
and your mind

if you have a dream that won’t let you go, that
tickles your solar plexus, heed it

turn dark feelings into paintings or poetry
or dancing

music is a kind of food

if you are sad talk to a happy woman who loves you
it will always help

move your body when you are sad or angry

avoid the following:
genetically modified ingredients
parabens
sodium lauryl sulfate
mercury in certain fish
neurotic thoughts about food
(is that a contradiction?)

love your curls though they tangle
your pale skin though it can burn in the sun
your nose though it is broader than some
your sturdy legs and feet

forget barbie she does not possess imagination

remember you are a botticelli angel

the planet we live on is perfection

love her like a goddess

love yourself as her daughter

there is a planet full of different kinds of beauty

the idea that only one type of woman is beautiful
is blasphemy

of everything i brought to the world in these
forty-five years
you and your brother are by far the most astounding

because of this i will always love your father

matter never vanishes, only changes

remember that when someone you love dies

your round head on my breast when you were born
is the memory
i will keep with me when i leave this body

when i am gone i will still be near you

this is how i know: when you were born
it was not a meeting
but a reunion

i am clockwise

i am intially clockwise, now i see both.

The Right Brain vs Left Brain test ... do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise?

If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.

Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it.

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses logic
detail oriented
facts rule
words and language
present and past
math and science
can comprehend
knowing
acknowledges
order/pattern perception
knows object name
reality based
forms strategies
practical
safe
RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses feeling
"big picture" oriented
imagination rules
symbols and images
present and future
philosophy & religion
can "get it" (i.e. meaning)
believes
appreciates
spatial perception
knows object function
fantasy based
presents possibilities
impetuous
risk taking
btw, i'm declaring psychology minor monday.

alexander wang

I don't know why the color's all messed up, but the point is i loveeeeee how alexander wang is working the shoulders for spring 09 collection.

ordos 100

for a while now arch daily has been featuring these Ordo projects one by one but it finally caught my attention today with the entry from Atelier Bow Wow whom i also just found out today that one of the partners, Yoshiharu Tsukamoto will be lecturing at Slocum sometime soon.
So i went and googled it.

Project Statement
: The scope of the project is to Develop 100 hundred villas in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China, for the Client, Jiang Yuan Water Engineering Ltd. FAKE Design, Ai Wei Wei studio in Beijing, has developed the masterplan for the 100 parcels of land and will curate the project, while Herzog and de Meuron have selected the 100 architects to participate. The collection of 100 Architects hail from 27 countries around the globe. The project has been divided into 2 phases. The first phase is the development of 28 parcels while the second phase will develop the remaining 72. Each architect is responsible for a 1000 square meter Villa.
- ORDOS 100,FAKE DESIGN

It reminded me of a project I've studied last semester, Borneo Sporenburg master planed by West 8. These projects where the master-planner set up guidelines and the overall vision for the project, then invite other architects to put their two cents in are really interesting. The whole project then becomes this unique identity.. composed of different identities in coherence.

my kind of art

"no plan survives first contact with the enemy.

sometimes being dumb is the only smart alternative.

shy people are secretly egoists.

nothing is real.

everything you see is a dream you project onto the world.

children live out their parents unconscious.

the only animals that suffer from anxiety are the ones that associate with humans.

i don't trust people who are very articulate.

the only way to be sane is to embrace your insanity.

when you feel guilty about being sad, remember walt disney was a manic depressive.

everything i said could be totally wrong."

because, a) one thing that took my breathe away during a stroll down soho in the summer was of course the huge topshop billboard.. but wait no longer! topshop annouced its opening date to be april 2, 2009. (and i wouldn't be in the city, boo!)

and b) $7 a copy well worth it. UNconventionality is Love.

PEPSI: new package design

I was on a happy misson to pathmark with daniel after dinner to get some ice-cream until i saw the new fugly pepsi design (once again), and what pepsi co. did to its whole line of products!

Pepsi's new packaging design is an obvious attempt to board the newest packaging trend: making bold statements with simple illustrations, vibrant colors, subtle wittiness and timelessness. but it failed horribly, why?

sierra mist: it is straight up tackiness. a misty-looking, oversized, verdana-fonted, "MIST". the background image is not at all convincing. this is the worst of the worse, in my opinion.

Mtn dew: i hate short-handedness! this is quite personal, but i rarely type shorthands even on text messages. maybe tomorrow can be tom, and message can be msg but a mountain cannot be mtn! i'm not buying it!

oh pepsi, i'm just not feeling your gradience, nor the newly simplified logo and text. ;(

FAILED.
but either or, i don't like you anyway,
I am a Coke addict.

Tropicana is a somewhat more bearable. I'm fine with the large containers, it seems like modern design for kids, fresh and clean. I don't have a photo, but the 16 oz. are actually cramped with texts, it's too messy.

gatorade, I like it! design aligns with product's mission. how motivating!

BLACK with honest arrogance

walk into the slocum gallery after a lecture or inside an exhibition at the center of architecture or wherever a bunch of them can be spotted, and you will too, wonder..

and black plastic-framed spectacles?

maybe not so much the glasses (although it perfectly describes our dean of Architecture at Syracuse), the black thing is a mystery. It's quite interesting how this phenomenon is so intriguing that a 288 page book is published as an attempt to answer this question.

and, along with the architect attitude:

Early in life I had to choose between honest arrogance and hypocritical humility. I chose the former and have seen no reason to change. - Frank Lloyd Wright
